Klimt, Ernst
(?-1992)
Germany. Political activist. A post-1945 political leader of the Sinti in Hildesheim and Lower Saxony. Klimt's family lived in the Sudetenland, where his father was a miner. The family was arrested and taken to Auschwitz, where Klimt arrived still wearing his Hitler Youth uniform. He was transferred, as being fit for work, to Buchenwald, where he took part in the internal camp resistance movement and helped to free the camp just as the U.S. Army arrived. In 1965, he gave up his business activities and devoted himself to civil rights. His life story was turned into a musical play at the Fahrenheit Theater in Germany.
