Economic and Social Council of the United Nations
   (ECOSOC)
   In 1979 the [International] Romani Union was recognized by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) as a nongovernmental organization representing Gypsies and Travelers. In 1993 it was upgraded to category II status, which gave it the right to speak at meetings. Études Tsiganes is also recognized by ECOSOC.
