Caravan Sites Act of 1968
United Kingdom. This Act placed a duty on county councils in particular to build sites for Gypsies "residing in and resorting to their area." At the same time, new powers were introduced to make parking a caravan in an area illegal when the area was "designated" as having provided enough caravan pitches or when the government judged it was not "expedient" for the area to do so. Progress under the Act was slow, and by 1994 only some 30 percent of Gypsies were housed on official caravan sites. Others had obtained permission for private sites in accordance with a number of circulars that followed the passing of the Caravan Sites Act of 1960. The Act also gave some protection to tenants on Gypsy caravan sites. The section of the Act relating to Gypsies was repealed in 1994 by the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act.
